Theme of Research

.

The Theme of Research /Study:

In Islam, Quran, the Book of Allah is the primary source of guidance, the Sunnah (practices) of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and practices of his four closest and righteous companions, Hazrat Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), Hazrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) and Hazrat Ali (RA) has a permanent priority over all other companions, jurists, scholars and people. By adhering to thier policies and practices, the original Islam of the first century Hijrah, the pure perfected religion of Islam can be revived, as declared by Allah Almighty on the Farewell Pilgrimage (10 Hijrah/ 631 C.E) (Quran;5:3). After reaching the heights of perfection, decline starts, which continues to this day.

It is our desire, prayer and endeavour to never give up "Perfected Deen Islam" and to strive for the revival of the "Perfected Deen Islam" of the first Islamic century.

The Qur’an is the last book (written instructions) of guidance for mankind till eternity, which is complete, detailed, easy, safe and secure.

The Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is a practical model of implementation of Qur’an, which was physically, practically demonstrated (like offering prayer and other such matters). Sunnah is transmitted from generation to generation, through a large number of people, hence it cannot be fabricated like some Hadiths by individual reporters.

It must be clarified from the outset that this study/ research has nothing to do with the views of those who totally reject and deny the Hadith literature due to lack of authenticity and recording after centuries, commonly known as "Munkir-e-Hadith” (deniers of hadith) or Ahlul-Quran (Quran only). Delivering the religious edict (fatwa) is the domain of experts (Ulema, Muhadeseen). Quran declares the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) as a role model for Muslim, hence his legacy, practice (Sunnah) cannot be ignored. The majority Muslims belief and practices are generally in line with the Quran and Sunnah. However The Quran provides much more for unity of Muslims and shun sectarianism:

And hold fast, all of you together, to the Rope of Allah (i.e. this Quran), and be not divided among yourselves, and remember Allah's Favour on you, for you were enemies one to another but He joined your hearts together, so that, by His Grace, you became brethren (in Islamic Faith), and you were on the brink of a pit of Fire, and He saved you from it. Thus Allah makes His Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.,) clear to you, that you may be guided.(Quran 3:103)

Following aspects are important for in depth study and analysis:

  1. Is the Qur’an just the last book of Allah, complete, detailed, protected or there  other books of guidance as well?

  2. Did the Quran mention or give any indication of other supplementary books?

  3. The Prophet (pbuh) commanded to follow the Sunnah (practices) of Rightly Guided Caliphs after him. What was their policy with regard to any other books or books besides the Quran?

  4. Should Muslim follow the religious scholars blindly like Jews and Chrsitians as mentioned in Quran  (9:31)

  5. The facts should be brought out for the knowledge of everyone, so that scholars can play their positive, constructive role in restoring Islam to the original, simple, perfect religion of the first century Hijra, rather than defending the errors  of past history.

Research theme is not:

  1. This study is Not about the significance of Hadith and its benefits.

  2. This study is Not about the nature of Hadith to be revelation or not.

  3. This study is Not about hadith authenticity accuracy or errors.

  4. This study is Not about Hadiths writing immediately or in the third century.

  5. This study is Not about the personal character of compilers of hadith books  to be pious, noble, good or ambitious. The matter is with Allah, who is aware of matters of heart and intentions.

  6. This study is Not to outrightly reject Hadith literature as some groups do. Any statement or  action attributed to The Prophet (pbuh), irrespective of its authenticity or classification is to be respected and analysed in the light of Quran. “Oral” transmission of Hadiths and “writing, compiling Hadith Books” are not synonymous.

  7. This study is Not about implications if the hadith books had not been compiled.

  8. This study is Not intended to break Muslim consensus and unity or to promote any secterian group which is practice of polytheists (Quran 30:31-32). Rather it is to promote unity and harmony through Quran, the Only unanimous book of  Muslim consensus.

  9. This study in Not normal, its unique , aims to gradually revive the first century Islam while remaining wihin the majority community of Muslim Ummah. Status quo should not be abruptly disrupted.

  10. This study is Not conclusive, it remains subject to debate and discussions till consensus emerges.

Some of the themes mentioned above are separate themes, which are neither part of this study, nor have been discussed in detail except partially wherever it was found to be inevitable.

  1. This study aims to explore, whether in Islam there is One, Last Book of guidance, the Holy Quran or Books.

  2. The study is primarily based upon undisputed unanimously agreed sources: The Holy Quran and undisputed historic realities of continuous (matwatar) Sunnah (practice) of the Prophet (pbuh), four Rightly Guided Caliphs and companions related with this topic. The other material is quoted just as additional references which support the continuous (matwatar) historic practices.

The main subject, the theme, is difficult for the people to comprehend because what has been taught and told for twelve centuries, deeply engraved in the minds, considered to be a part of faith and practice, is being questioned, through solid evidence and arguments from Qur'an and Sunnah of the closest companions, the Rightly Guided Caliphs [the special title and honor bestowed by the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)] and through reference to the hadiths. Hence it is very difficult to accept so easily. One wonders if  he has been deceived?

In such a situation one may immediately go into a state of denial and defensiveness, without understanding the theme or under the influence of preconceived ideas, the hard facts and arguments. suppressed through emotions (nafas).

It is therefore important to describe the theme:

"The Last Book or Books? Return to the Qur'an and Sunnah"

  1. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) commanded Muslims to adhere to the Sunnah of the Companions. Those pious companions, Umar and Abu Bakr Siddiue arranged the compilation of Quran in the form of Book, by collecting fragments and memorization of companions. Zaid bin Thabit , the scribe of revelations was head of committee.  Arrangements were, therefore, made to collect and gather all the written pieces of the Qur’an left by the Holy Prophet, and those in the possession of his Companions. Then with the cooperation of those Companions who had committed the whole or any part of the Qur’an to memory word by word, all the written pieces were compared with each other for verification. Zaid would not take down anything in his manuscript unless all the three sources tallied with copy. This authenticated copy of the whole Qur’an was kept in the house of Hafsa, Omar’s daughter, and one of the wives of the Holy prophet and it was proclaimed that anyone, who desired, might make a copy of it or compare it with the copy already possessed. Later the third Caliph Usman ((R.A) again under committee chaired by  Zaid bin Thabit rechecked the manuscript thoroughly and issued official copies.  The effort is matchless in accuracy and authenticity in the entire history of world religions. Can an individual effort by people after two centuries be equated with this effort?

  2. Among the companions, when Hazrat Umar (RA) became Caliph, the issue of Hadith writing came up. He decided after much deliberation that, because the first ummahs (Jews, Chrisitans) were destroyed by bringing other books against the Book of Allah, hence in Islam there is no other book but the Book of Allah. This policy was supported by the other Rightly Guided Caliphs, (Mahad-deen) and the Companions as a whole. It is a historic fact that NO Hadith book was compiled and published during first century Hijrah, strictly adhering to the policies of Caliph. Existence of private notes for memorization cannot be ruled out. Only oral narration was adhered to, which was the norm. The famous books of Hadith have been written in the third century Hijrah, in violation of policy and command of Rightly Guided Caliphs. It does not need any discussion or proof, an undeniable history fact not fiction.

  3. The "Righteous Caliphs, the Muhaddithin" were not only political rulers but also religious leaders. This is a special honor for the Rightly Guided Caliphs, who made important religious decisions that are being followed. After the first century, when it became customary to compile Hadiths in the form of books, what was feared  by Hazrat Umar and Ali happened two centuries later;  a simple and easy religion, Islam, turned into a complex religion, ignoring the last book of Allah, indulging in “Qeel o Qaal”  (unnessary discussions- It was said that was said), this was the fear expressed by Hazrat Ali (RA) when he also justified the decision of Hazrat Umar (RA).

  4. No one can change the Qur'an, even if there is a difference of opinion, there is an easy solution, there are the “verses which are precise (muhkmaat) - they are the foundation of the Book (Umm al-Kitab)” (Qur'an 3: 7).  This rule was not applied to the Hadith literature, now out of million, there are more than twenty five thousand hadiths of different classification in 75 books, besides many sects. The followers of sects reject Hadiths quoted by opponents  as weak, and engage in unnecessary interpretations and discussions. This is the way of the Jews  and Chrisitians,  Muslims went against the teachings of Quran and Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), Sunnah of the Righteous Caliphs, because the personal interests of some religious leaders may be involved, they shall always oppose  any effort to return to the Islam of  first century Hujra through reforms.

  5. There are other groups like “Ahle-Quran” [People of Quran] holding another extreme position, to only follow Quran, while Quran does talk about obedience to the Prophet (pbuh) being a role model. This aspect cannot be ignored while looking for the true practices and ways of Prophet (pbuh).

  6. Study of the Quran and observing continuous practices (Sunnah) of the Prophet (pbuh) clear the haze and we can get clear guidance. This study has been undertaken to debate and discuss the issue with open mind so that Muslims can practice the original perfected Islam of first century.

  7. It may be kept in view that:

    1. The principles of religion (usool-e-deen) and the promotion of religion (froogh-deen) are not being touched (although this is the work of the scholars).

    2. The the six basic fundamentals of faith and five pillars of Islam are not being discussed, they are part of faith.

    3. No ridiculation of any sect or unnecessary promotion.

    4. There is no ground for a new sect, sectarianism is forbidden in the Qur'an - only Islam and Muslim.

    5. This is just an intellectual exercise, to ponder over the Qur'an and find the ways to restore the original status of the Qur'an.

    6. Follow the way Islam is being practiced in the light of Qur'an and Sunnah.

    7. Be tolerant and patient with others and use religious material positively instead of creating hatred or promoting sectarianism.

    8. Continuous (matwater), Hadiths are the most authentic, there is scholarly consensus that their denier is a disbeliever.

    9. The Hadiths attributed to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), even if they are inauthentic, weak, they must be respected and analysed in the light of Quran. It's a great treasure of knowledge about the Seerah of the Prophet (pbuh), companions and history.

Quran: Only 1 Book (Abstract)

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Introduction:

Islam is based on the Quran and Sunnah of the Messenger of God, Muhammad (peace be upon him). The Holy Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in twenty three years, which was preserved through memorization and writing. Through the efforts of the first two of four Rightly Guided Caliphs,  the copy of Quran in the form of Book was prepared and later after rechecking, distributed by 3rd Caliph Usman(Allah may be pleased with him).

The Qur'an is the last book (written instructions) of guidance for mankind till eternity. The Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is a practical model of implementation of Qur'an, which was physically, practically demonstrated (like offering prayer and other such matters). Sunnah is transmitted from generation to generation. Hadith is a writing, composed of words, deeds and historical events attributed to the Prophet (pbuh] and companions. Hadiths writing  was disallowed by Prophet (pbuh), later not compiled by the Rightly guided Caliph Rashidin in the form of a book, like Quran,  instead its continuous oral transmission (Tawatar) was considered sufficient. Not that they had some personal reasons, but very logical strong reasons from experience of past generations (Jews and Christians).

This study has been undertaken to examine the existence of other books (Hadith)  beside the Quran in the light of the Quran, Sunnah and history. The discussion started on social media. Seeing the keen interest shown by members, an exclusive WhatsApp Group was formed which included only seven members, comprising highly learned very senior police officer, senior army officers, PhD university professor, medical doctor/ professor, head of a Darul Uloom and an Islamic religious scholar undergoing PhD at the International Islamic University. The discussion continued for a few days, and found it to be very interesting and useful. After further study and research I have compiled it in three parts; (1) Important Information (2) Research / Analysis (3) Q & A. The 153 pages study has been published on the internet available at the links. The Study has also been sent to “Islamic Research Institute”, International Islamic University, Islamabad. This “Abstract” introduces the salient aspects very briefly.

Following aspects are important:

  1. Is the Qur'an just the last book of Allah or are there  other books as well?
  2. The facts should be brought out for the knowledge of everyone, no matter how bitter they may be, so that scholars can play their positive, constructive role in restoring Islam to the original, simple, perfect religion of the first century Hijra, rather than defending the errors  of past history.
  3. There is no priesthood in Islam: They (Jews and Christians) have taken their scholars and monks as lords besides Allah  ,.. (Quran; 9:31). Muslim believes in only One Lord (Rabb), which is Allah. Should Muslim follow the religious scholars blindly? Or insist on following the Quran & Sunnah?

Fate of Previous Scriptures:

Allah sent His Last Messenger Muhammad (pbuh) and the Last Book, Quran for the guidance of humanity till eternity because the previous scriptures were corrupted and undermined by human written books.

Torah revealed to Moses (pbuh)  has 5853 verses, whereas Talmud (written by Jewish religious scholars), stretches to well over 10 million words across 38 volumes. It takes precedence over Divine scripture.

The New Testament (NT), the Christian holy scripture, has 27 books, only 4 Gospels with some verses attributed to Jesus Christ, while 23 other books have been written by others attributed to St. Paul and his disciples. NT comprises a total 7,959 verses, of which but 1,599 are sayings of Christ. The words count, New Testament is 181,253. Only 36,450 of these 181,253 words are the words of Christ—barely over 20 per cent. Jesus Christ criticized the clergy and tried to guide them to follow  the true teachings of God in the scripture but they turned against him.

Quran

Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) made special arrangements and took extra care for writing Quran by scribes, memorization and preservation. He prohibited writing of anything else besides Quran. The Prophet (pbuh) had expressly forbidden the writing down of any hadith! According to Muslim and ibn Hanbal: Abi Said al Khudri reported that the Prophet said; "Do not write down anything from me except the Quran. Whoever writes down anything other than the Quran must erase it."  There are some reports of permission to some individual but the fact remains that he did not leave anything written except Quran. Even till the 2nd century this status was maintained.

Quran was very carefully preserved during the first three caliphs reign and standard copies circulated. The Caliphs adhered to the policy and for next century there was only One Book of Allah, The Holy Quran, which has 6,236 verses. After the first century when all Companions also passed away, Hadith books started to emerge in 2nd and 3rd century Hijrah. Presently  there are over 25000 Hadiths, over 70 books There are millions of Hadith not included in these books by the writers. Imam Shafi said that no one in entire history can claim to know all Ahadith, it's humanly impossible. Their grades of authenticity also keep changing. However, according to Imam Sayuti (Egyptian scholar, historian and jurist), the most authentic (Tawatar/ Continuous) Hadiths  concerning certain rituals, such as, Prayers, fasts, etc are only 113.

Role of Rightly Guided Caliphs in Preserving The  Book of Allah, The Quran:

Caliph Abu-Bakr (Allah may be pleased with him),the first Caliph, on persuasion of Omar, agreed to collect and arrange Quran and kept safe. He  is reported to have compiled a work, in which there were 500 traditions of the Prophet, and handed it over to his daughter ‘Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her). The next morning, he took it back from her and destroyed it, saying: “I wrote what I understood; it is possible however that there should be certain things in it which did not correspond textually with what the Prophet had said.”.

Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with them) as heard by Abdullah bin Yassar that, he heard delivering him a sermon, Ali  said that whoever had any writing other than the Qur'an, must return home and delete it, because the previous nations went astray when they abandoned the book of Lord and indulged in the debates of their scholars.

Caliph Omar (may Allah be pleased with them) who enjoyed very special status, being a close associate of the Prophet (pbuh), as 2nd Caliph, after thorough deliberations,  decided not to have any other book besides book of Allah, the Holy Quran, because the previous communities (Jews and Christians)  went astray by ignoring the book of Allah and by indulging in unnecessary issues and debates., Moreover they were commanded not to add anything or delete from the Scripture (Torah) which they violated.

As to Umar (Allah may be pleased with him), we learn on the authority of Ma’mar ibn Rashid, that during his caliphate, Umar once consulted the companions of the Prophet on the subject of codifying the Hadith. Everybody seconded the idea. Yet Umar continued to hesitate and pray to God for a whole month for guidance and enlightenment. Ultimately, he decided not to undertake the task, and said: “Former peoples neglected the Divine Books and concentrated only on the  conduct of the prophets; I do not want to set up the possibility of confusion between the Divine Qur’an and the Prophet’s Hadith [Dr. Mohammad Hamidullah]

Another narration: “Umar ibn al-Khattab once tried to deal with the problem of committing the Hadith to writing. The companions of the Prophet whom he consulted, encouraged him, but he was not quite sure whether he should proceed. One day, moved by God’s inspiration, he made up his mind and announced: “I wanted to have the traditions of the Prophet (Hadith) written down, but I fear that the Book of God might be encroached upon. Hence I shall not permit this to happen.” He, therefore, changed his mind and instructed the Muslims throughout the provinces: “Whoever has a document bearing a prophetic tradition, shall destroy it.” The Hadith, therefore, continued to be transmitted orally and was not collected and written down until the period of al-Mamun.” (169-217 Hijrah) [Muhammad Husayn Haykal]

Quran does not want anyone to believe in any other book or Hadith, except Quran, which is called the best Hadith (discourse, scripture), here are some verses:

  • Quran is a perfect, complete and fully detailed  divine revelation (6:19, 38, & 114-116).
  • “Allah has sent down the best Hadith (ahsana alhadeethi kitaban) a consistent Book wherein is reiteration. The skins shiver therefrom of those who fear their Lord; then their skins and their hearts relax at the remembrance of Allah . That is the guidance of Allah by which He guides whom He wills. And one whom Allah leaves astray - for him there is no guide.” [ Quran 39:23]
  • “These are the verses of Allah  (Quran) which We recite to you in truth. Then in what Hadith after Allah and His verses will they believe?” [Quran; 45:6)
  • “Then in what Hadith  after the Qur'an will they believe? [Quran; 77:50 ,  7:185]
  • “Then in what Hadith  after the Qur'an will they believe? [Quran; 7:185]

Here is the Trial of believers (Quran:29:2-7)... “Should I seek a judge other than God, when it is He who has revealed the Book, clearly explained. Those to whom We gave the Book earlier know that it is the truth revealed by your Lord. Therefore, have no doubts. The Word of your Lord is perfected in truth and justice. None can change His words. He is the All Hearing, the All Knowing. If you obey the majority of those on earth, they will lead you astray from God's way. They follow nothing but conjecture. They are only guessing., (Quran 6:114-116)

Quran also does not approve of any name except “Muslim” for the beleivers  endorsed 44 times and rejects sectarianism:

“.. Allah named you “Muslims” before [in former scriptures] and in this [Quran] that the Messenger may be a witness over you and you may be witnesses over the people. (Quran;22:78)

“Surely those who divide the religion into sects and identify themselves as a sect, O Muhammad, you have nothing to do with them. Their case will be called to account by Allah Himself, He will inform them as to what they did.”(Quran;6:159)

During his farewell sermon, the Messenger of Allah said:   "I left for you what if you hold up to, you will never be misguided, the BOOK OF ALLAH." [Muslim 15/19, 1218; Ibn Majah 25/84, Abu dawud 11/56.]

The command and Sunnah of the Rightly Guided Caliphs was in-line with Quran, and Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), which was strictly respected and followed until the end of the first century Hijrah. The famous books of Hadiths were compiled in the third century, in violation of Quran, command and Sunnah of Rightly Guided Caliphs, hence their legitimacy remains questionable.

The basis of religion is not on the selfish desires of people,  but on Quran and Sunnah. What is good or less good is well known to the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) and special people nominated by him to make important decisions [Rightly Guided Caliphs in this case]. Obedience to Allah, His Messenger (pbuh) and people of authority (Rightly Guided Caliphs) forms the basis of Islam, respectively.

Follow Rightly Guided Caliphs:

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said;

"Certainly, the one who will live among you will see lots of differences. So stick to my sunnah and the sunnah of the right-principled and rightly-guided successors. Bite onto that with your molar teeth."

"Acting upon my Sunnah and the Sunnah of my Khulaafa-i-Rashideen is obligatory for you." (Ibni Maajah, Ch 6)

Obedience to the Messenger has been repeatedly highlighted.(Quran :4:80, 4:146, 4:14, 4:59)

There is a dire need to restore the central position of the Quran in Islam and in the lives of Muslims, in line with Quran and the Sunnah [obedience to Prophet (pbuh)], Rightly Guided Caliphs and companions, so that sectarianism , moral decay,  intellectual stagnation and other issues can be tackled.

Conclusion

The Study / Research reveal following:

  1. Quran does not permit to believe in any book /Hadith except Quran.
  2. Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), prohibited writing of his speech (Hadith). If someone wrote, it was for memorization and then deleted.
  3. Prophet (pbuh) left written Quran (unbounded) also memorized by companions.
  4. The Holy Quran was thoroughly rechecked by special committee and eye witnesses, bound in the form of Book under special arrangements by the first two Caliphs and distributed by 3rd Caliph.
  5. The issue of Hadith collection did not arise with the first caliph, it was considered by 2nd Caliph and rejected to avoid any book besides Quran, which is complete, detailed and comprehensive (moreover the policy enunciated by  Quran and Messenger must also have been kept in view). The previous communities went astray by neglecting and mixing up Book of God with other books.
  6. The decision of the 2nd Caliph Umer (R).A) was also endorsed by other Rightly Guided Caliphs (who were commanded by the Prophet (pbuh) to be followed  by the Muslims). This policy/ practice remained in force till the second century Hijra when all Companions had passed away.
  7. The Sunnah (practice) of Prophet (pbuh) being of practical nature (offering prayer etc), continues to be practiced/ followed by Muslims and passed on from generation to generation. It is not dependent upon Hadith books or writings and is fully secure.
  8. The famous Hadith books compiled / written in the 3rd century Hijrah apart from benefits have been used to reinvent religion , sects (with distortion due to difference in transmission, understanding and interpretations) as if nothing existed during the first two centuries.  Quran and Sunnah through historic continuity always existed without any break). Islam, was declared as the “Perfected Deen”, on 10 th of Dul-Hajj, 10 Hijrah.(Quran;5:3).
  9. Muslims deviated from the right path, once they practically abandoned the Quran. While following their selfish desires adopted the path and practice of  Jewish and Christian to create more books to undermine the Book of God despite clear warning by Allah, that: “They have taken their rabbis and their monks as lords apart from God(9:31)
  10. Allah has named the believers as Muslims, at least 44 times in the Quran. All believers must abandon their sectarian titles, names, prefixes and suffixes and remain satisfied and happy with the name given by Allah.
  11. Every effort should be made to restore Islam to its perfected, pure, pristine state, of first centruy Hijraj, by follwing Quran, Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), four Rightly Guided Caliphs and companions, anything contradicting Quran be extirpated after through scrutiny.
  12. Extensive studies and research may be conducted at official and unofficial level through composite study/research groups and teams comprising religious scholars and scholars from different fields with wide expertise. It's too serious a matter to be left to religious people alone.
  13. However till some consensus is achieved status quo should be maintained to avoid any  intellectual , theological anarchy / confusion to maintain unity and order.

Legitimacy of "Consensus" on Hadith Books?

The Prophet objected to another Book (of Hadith) with the Book of Allah, Commands to Erase Hadiths:
The Prophet (pbuh) commanded  the Companions to "erase whatever was written" ( Masnad Ahmad 10670) and  here the reason given by the Prophet was , Another book with the book of Allah? (so as not to follow the path of the people of the  earlier communities )

#1 - Prohibition of Hadith Writing
A.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that once we were sitting and writing the words coming out of the blessed mouth of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).He asked what are you writing? We replied that what we hear from you.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Another book in the presence of book of Allah? Keep the Book of Allah pure. Then we collected what ever we had written and burnt it.

Then we asked the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) if he could narrate his Hadeeths or not? . The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Yes. You can narrate my hadiths, there is no harm in that, but whoever intentionally attributes a lie to me, he should make his abode in Hell, then we asked, "O Messenger of Allah, can we narrate the  events of the Children of Israel?" Then we asked, "O Messenger of Allah, can we mention the events of the Children of Israel?" He said yes! You can narrate them too, there's no harm with that either, because whatever you say about them will have even more surprises.(Musnad Ahmad, Book: Narrations of Hazrat Abu Saeed Al-Khudri, Chapter: Narrations of Hazrat Abu Saeed Al-Khudri, Hadith No: 10670)

[Note: Abu Hurayrah uses "We" were writing , means he was also part of team writing Hadiths. He never wrote Hadith till his death. Implies that the Command of Prophet (pbuh) was permanent, temporary permissions to individuals were granted for weak memory or any other reason. If ban was lifted, why would someone ask for permission to write?]

B.
In the famous book, "Taq-yeed Al-Ilm", Abu Hurayra said, the messenger of God was informed that some people are writing his hadiths. He took to the pulpit of the mosque and said, "What are these books that I heard you wrote? I am just a human being. Anyone who has any of these writings should bring it here. Abu Hurayra said we collected all these and burned them in fire." [Hadith of Umar's ban on hadith]
C.
Abu Hurayra narrates: God’s Messenger once came near us while some friends were writing down what they had heard from him. He asked what they were writing. ‘We are writing what we heard from you’, they answered. The Messenger warned: ‘Do you know that the communities preceding you went astray because they wrote down from others beside the Book of God.’[Khatib al-Baghdadi, Taqyid al-‘Ilm, 34.]
[Note: Same reason was given by Umer and Ali (R.A) while banning Hadith writing.]

#2 Prohibition of Hadith Writing
Abu Said Khudri reported that Allahs Messenger ﷺ said: Do not take down anything from me, and he who took down anything from me except the Quran, he should efface that and narrate from me, for there is no harm in it and he who attributed any falsehood to me -and Hammam said: I think he also said: "deliberately"- he should in fact find his abode in the Hell-Fire. [Saheeh Muslim 7510]

#3 Prohibition of Hadith Writing
Narrated Al-Muttalib bin Abdullah bin Hantab (RA) : Al-Muttalib ibn Abdullah ibn Hantab said: Zayd ibn Thabit entered upon Muawiyah and asked him about a tradition. He ordered a man to write it. Zayd said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered us not to write any of his traditions. So he erased it. [Abu Dawood 3647]

#4Prohibition of Hadith Writing
Hazrat Ali said, Prophet said:“Whoever seeks guidance in other than Qur'an, Allah will lead him astray. That (Qur'an) is a strong rope of Allah and it is a firm and strong(Zikr) (remembrance) and it is a straight path.” (Tirmidhi 2906)

#5 Missing Hadith as source of Justice:
When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) intended to send Mu'adh ibn Jabal to the Yemen, he asked: How will you judge when the occasion of deciding a case arises?
He replied: I shall judge in accordance with Allah's Book. He asked: (What will you do) if you do not find any guidance in Allah's Book? He replied: (I shall act) in accordance with the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ).He asked: (What will you do) if you do not find any guidance in the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and in Allah's Book? He replied: I shall do my best to form an opinion and I shall spare no effort. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) then patted him on the breast and said: Praise be to Allah Who has helped the messenger of the Messenger of Allah to find something which pleases the Messenger of Allah [ Reference : Sunan Abi Dawud 3592, Book 25, Hadith 22, English translation : Book 24, Hadith 3585 ]
Hazrat Ali (RA) Qur'an and Hadiths Hazrat Abdullah Ibn Yasar says that one day Hazrat Ali (RA) gathered all the Companions and ordered that after returning from here, the first thing everyone should do is to erase whoever has any writing. Because the first nations have perished because of following the hadiths of their scholars and abandoning the Book of Allah. (Short Comprehensive Statement of Knowledge, p. 33)
مختصر جامع بیان العلم ص 33)
Hazrat Ali (RA) said in the sermon: “Whoever has a scripture (other than the Qur'an), I swear that if he returns home, he will be wiped out, because the previous nations perished when they read the Book of their Lord. Leaving and stuck in the words of their scholars ”[Ibn Hjr Asqlani , History of Hadith Nakhbatul Fikr]

History records that the writings of the Rabbinic literature -the Talmud,  did overshadow the Torah, which was revealed to the earlier Prophet Moses. The writings  of Paul - the Epistles, did overshadow the Injeel  that was revealed to Prophet Isa. In  other words, the Prophet did not want his Ummah to repeat the same mistake of Creating  a Secondary Document" that would at a later date overshadow what was revealed to  him

CLAIM: Prohibition was Temporary not to Mix Hadith with Quran:
Perhaps the prohibition of that was for when it was feared that it would get  mixed in with the Qur'an, and then afterwards it was secured from that.  And Allah knows best.

Comments :
The use of the word "Perhaps", and the phrase “Allah knows best" indicate that the above  statement is based upon an assumption or a surmise.

The statement has No supporting  evidence that would qualify the passage as a definite statement of Truth and not a  speculative conjecture, guesswork.

Most of them follow naught but conjecture. Assuredly  conjecture can by no means take the place of truth. Lo! Allah is Aware of what they do.  (Quran:10:36 )

CLAIM: Hadith writing was permitted : It has been established in the two Saheehs that the Messenger of  Allah (pbuh) said,    ' Write for Abee Shaah.' And indeed we clarified this topic in the  introductions of our first books. And for Allah is the praise.  Comments There are reports that when an individual had a weak memory, the Messenger of Allah  gave such individual instructions (Tirmdhi 2666) . There are always exceptions to well-defined rules.  Even within the Revealed Verses of the Qur’an, there are exceptions for certain groups of  people for certain reasons. Such exceptions are not the norm and cannot be applied to  everyone or to normal circumstances. This particular isolated incident concerned the  writing of a Khutbah (the nature of which is different from that of the prophetic sayings  or deeds). One cannot with all sincerity elevate an isolated instruction to a valid  command from the Messenger, to repeal the earlier command; “Whoever writes from me  something other than the Qur'an, then let him erase it.”

#1 Claim Hadith Writing  Permitted
Narrated Abu Hurairah (RA) : When Makkah was conquered, the Messenger of Allah  ﷺ  got up and said: If a relative of anyone is killed, he will have a choice between two: he (the slayer) will either pay the blood-wit or he will be killed. A man of the Yemen called Abu Shah stood up and said: Write for me, Messenger of Allah. The narrator al-Abbas (b. al-Walid) said: Write to me, (you people). The Messenger of Allah  ﷺ  said: Write (you people), for Abu Shah. These are the wordings of the tradition of Ahmad. Abu Dawud said: Write (you people), for me, that is, the address of the Prophet  ﷺ . [Abu Dawood Hadith 4505 ]

 #2 Claim Hadith Writing  Permitted
Ali had No Book besides Quran:
I asked `Ali "Do you have anything Divine literature besides what is in the Qur'an?" Or, as Uyaina once said, "Apart from what the people have?" `Ali said, "By Him Who made the grain split (germinate) and created the soul, we have nothing except what is in the Qur'an and the ability (gift) of understanding Allah's Book which He may endow a man, with and what is written in this sheet of paper." I asked, "What is on this paper?" He replied, "The legal regulations of Diya (Blood-money) and the (ransom for) releasing of the captives, and the judgment that no Muslim should be killed in Qisas (equality in punishment) for killing a Kafir (disbeliever). [Sahih al-Bukhari 6915, Book 87, Hadith 53, USC-MSA web (English) reference : Vol. 9, Book 83, Hadith 50 ]
There are many more arguments in favour of writing Hadiths by individuals, even by Shias, but no one discuss as to why all 4 Caliphs including Ali (R.A) did not make arrangements to write Hadith Books, while Quran had been collected, checked, rechecked and distributed in standard book form?
No one discusses the  main reason given by Prophet (pbuh), Umer and Ali (R.A) not to have another book beside book of Allah.

Comments
  1. Writing letters to neighboring rulers,  official correspondence,  instructions , Zakat calculations, pacts , charter of Madina, Hudabia etc  cannot be cited to support Hadith writing/  permission,  which was prohibited due to specific reason,  Not to have any other Book besides Quran , the reason  further explained by Caliph Umer (R.A) that the previous communities went astray due to same reason, they preferred other books over Book of God, no other book like Mishna.
  2. Since writing was permitted for people with weak memory, legal regulations written on piece of paper is to avoid any error on memory on such important matter involving calculations etc. More over we find Ali (R.A) asking people to erase what ever they have except Quran, hence argument does not support Hadith writing or book writing.
  3. If someone maintained and preserved private notes deliberately, this violation and disobedience of Command of Prophet (pbuh) & Rightly Guided Caliphs is a great sin, it cannot become justification to write Hadith Books.
  4. The individual private notes for memorization do not justify writing of Hadith Books in the presence of explicit command of Prophet (pbuh) and Sunnah of Rightly Guided Caliphs.
  5. The Hadith books are mysteriously silent on the Hadith ban by Umer (R.A) endorsed and maintained by Rightly Guided Caliphs? The information is found in history and other books.

Proof : Hadith Writing   was not Permitted

The Grandson of Abu Bakr

The next story that Ibn Saad (168-230 Hijrah) recounts about the Commander of the Faithful and his attitude toward the Hadith is found in volume five of the Tabaqat. It is related to the authority of al-Qasim ibn Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr al-Siddiq (d. 106 AH)—the grandson of Abu Bakr, another of Mumammad’s (pbuh) closest companions and the first of the rightly guided Caliphs who led the Muslim community after his death. When al-Qasim was asked by his student Abd Allah ibn al-Ala’ (d. 164 AH) to dictate Hadith, he refused, saying;

“the Hadith multiplied during the time of Umar; then he called on the people to bring them to him, and when they brought them to him, he ordered them to be burned.” Afterward, he said, ‘a Mishna like the Mishna of the People of the Book,’ (mathna’a ka mathna’at ahl al-Kitab).”

“From that day on,” Abd Allah ibn al-Ala’ continues, “Al-Qasim forbade me to write Hadith.”

As in the first story, what disturbs Umar is the writing of a book that will compete with the Book of God.

Listening to Hadith / Oral Transmission and mushroom growth of  Fake/ weak/ unreliable  Hadiths:

Abū Ayyūb Sulaymān bin Ubayd Allah al-Ghaylānī narrated to us, Abū Āmir, meaning al-Aqadī, narrated to us, Rabāh narrated to us, on authority of Qays bin Sa’d, on authority of Mujāhid, he said Bushayr ul-Adawī came to Ibn Abbās then he set about narrating to him, saying:
‘The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah upon him, said…’, ‘the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah upon him, said…’. Then it seemed that Ibn Abbās was not listening to his Ḥadīth and not reflecting on them, so [Bushayr] said: ‘Oh Ibn Abbās, why is it that I see you not listening to my Ḥadīth? I narrate to you on authority of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah upon him, however you are not listening’. Ibn Abbās said: ‘Indeed once upon a time we would listen to a man saying, ‘the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah upon him, said…’ rushing towards him with our eyes and harkening towards him with our ears; then when the people took the difficult and the docile we no longer took from people except those whom we knew’. [Saheeh Muslim Hadith# 20]
(صحیح مسلم، کتاب: مقدمہ مسلم، باب: ضعیف لوگوں سے روایت کرنے کی ممانعت اور روایت کے تحمل میں احتیاط کے بیان میں، حدیث نمبر: 20)
Salamah bin Shabīb narrated to me, al-Humaydī narrated to us, Sufyān narrated to us, he said I heard Abū Mūsā [Isrā’īl bin Mūsā al-Basrī] saying: ‘Amr bin Ubayd narrated to us before what happened’ [i.e. before he became Mu’tazilī].

Even if there is any doubt or ambiguity , the Sunnah of Rightly Guided Caliphs , not to allow Hadith writing / books is enough to clarify that there is NO book except  Quran in Islam. It is part of Faith (Ayman) to believe in Books of Allah, Quran being the Last Book, any deviation in belief is corruption and serious matter. Following aspects must be be kept in view:
Hadith as a source of scriptural authority

This is particularly important aspect of the controversies over the Hadith as a source of scriptural authority because that authority rests on the belief in Prophetic authority and the duality of revelation.

The first story Ibn Sad narrates about Umar’s attitude toward the recording of the Hadith occurs in the section where he recounts his appointment as Caliph (Dhikr istikhlaf Umar). He cites a story from Sufyan ibn Uyayna (d. 198 AH), on the authority of al-Zuhri that

“Umar wanted (arada) to write the Traditions (al-sunan), so he spent a month praying for guidance; and afterward, he became determined to write them. But then he said: ‘I recalled a people who wrote a book, then they dedicated themselves to it (aqbalu alaihi) to it and neglected the Book of God (wa-taraku Kitab Allah).

The Legitimacy of so called Consensus on Hadith Books?
Claim: Indeed it was related that scholars of later times agreed upon the  permisibility of writing the hadiths, and this matter is exhaustive, widespread, and well known, without disapproval.
Comments
  1. The Statement speaks of “agreement(s)” by and between the scholars. Such agreement(s)  may be “exhaustive, widespread, and well known and without disapproval”, yet if they  are applied to annul, rescind or invalidate a maroof Command of the Prophet, they have  to be based upon a similar maroof or explicit Command by the Prophet (pbuh)
  2. The Claim/ Statement  does not speak of receiving such a directive.
  3. Indeed, if there was a valid maroof or  explicit narration for the permissiblity of writing the hadiths/ books then the need for such  agreement was un-called for, redundant and superfluous .
  4. The Statement speaks of the  scholars of later times but does not specify the time period(s) of such accord(s).
  5. It does  not mention the names of the scholars that had reached an agreement.
  6. This agreement  seems to be a kind of verbal thing because there is no mention of any written document  or the text having been recorded.
  7. In absence of these essential data the quoted statement  appears to be lacking the necessary support to rescind the earlier Command of the  Prophet; 'Whoever writes from me something other than the Qur'an, then let him erase it.'

The most important but ignored deed of Hazrat Umar (RA) ......[........]
.....................
Al-Khateeb says: "We consider Ibn Saad as reliable. His reporting indicates that he takes meticulous care in most of what he reports." Ibn Khillikan describes him as "truthful and reliable." Imam Ibn Hajar gives him a similar approval and says: "He is one of the top reliable and meticulous scholars." Indeed critical scholars place him in their ranking higher than his teacher, Al-Waqidi. The book that kept Ibn Saad’s name well-known in scholarly circles up to our present time, and is likely to keep it that way for ever, is known for short as Al-Tabaqat, while its full name is Kitab Al-Tabaqat Al-Kabeer. It is an encyclopedic work which the author intended to take up to 15 volumes, serving the Sunnah and Hadith scholarship. [Arab News]
